Dryer Vent Cleaning: The Fire-Safety Item Nobody Schedules
Long dry times, a hot laundry room and lint at the hood mean a restricted dryer vent. What cleaning includes, how often, the cost, and USFA fire data.

How do you know your dryer vent needs cleaning?
The dryer tells you before the vent does. When the exhaust path is restricted, moist air cannot leave fast enough, so the dryer runs longer, the room heats up, and the machine's own safety thermostat may start shutting the heat off early. Most homeowners notice the second cycle before they notice anything else. Newer dryers may throw an airflow or vent-restriction code, which is worth taking seriously rather than clearing and ignoring.
Outside, look at the termination hood while the dryer runs. You should see the flap open and feel a strong, warm, damp stream. Lint packed behind the flap, a flap that barely moves, or no air at all means the run is clogged somewhere between the dryer and the wall. A hood that is stuffed with a bird's nest is more common in the Mid-South than people expect.

- Lint around the outside hood, on the ground beneath it, or behind the dryer.

How common are dryer fires, and why do they start?
The U.S. Fire Administration's topical report on clothes dryer fires in residential buildings estimates about 2,900 such fires reported to U.S. fire departments each year, causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. That analysis covered 2008 to 2010, and it found failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to ignition at 34 percent, with dust, fiber and lint the leading item first ignited. The USFA's current appliance-safety page gives a more recent figure: failure to clean was the leading factor at 31 percent for 2018 to 2020.
The mechanism is simple. Lint is combustible, the dryer's lint screen catches only part of it, and the rest rides the moist exhaust into the duct. Where airflow slows, lint settles. As it builds, airflow drops further, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and the heating element or a failing component can ignite what has collected. USFA also notes that nests and damaged duct sections block exhaust the same way, which is why the whole run matters and not just the screen.
Why Mid-South homes are harder on dryer vents
Humidity is the first problem. Dryer exhaust is already wet; in a Memphis August it is pushing wet air into a duct that is sitting at outdoor dew point. Lint that would stay fluffy in a dry climate turns into a damp felt that clings to the duct wall and to every screw head and seam. That felt does not blow out on its own, and it is the material we pull out of DeSoto County laundry rooms by the bucket.
Run length is the second problem. A large share of the homes we service in Southaven, Olive Branch, Horn Lake and Hernando are slab-on-grade houses from the 1990s and 2000s with the laundry room in the middle of the plan. There is no basement to drop into, so the vent goes up through the attic and out the roof or runs a long way to a side wall, with several elbows. The model residential code caps a dryer exhaust duct at 35 feet and subtracts an equivalent length for every elbow, and many interior laundry rooms are near that limit the day they are built. Every foot and turn is another place for lint to settle.
Third is material. Flexible foil or vinyl transition duct crushed behind the dryer, or used for the whole run, traps lint in its ridges. The model code calls for a smooth-interior metal exhaust duct, no screws protruding into the airstream, a transition duct no longer than 8 feet, and an outdoor termination with a backdraft damper and no screen. When we find foil run through an attic, we tell you, because cleaning it is a temporary fix.
What does a professional dryer vent cleaning include?
A proper cleaning works the entire run from the dryer connection to the outdoor hood, not just the first few feet you can reach. We pull the dryer, disconnect and inspect the transition duct, and run a rotary brush through the full length while a vacuum or blower moves the loosened lint out. The hood and its damper get cleared, any screen someone added gets removed, and we look for crushed, disconnected or sagging sections in the attic or wall where lint will collect again.
Before and after, we check that air is actually moving at the hood. Then the dryer is reconnected with a proper clamp, not tape, and pushed back without kinking the transition. If the run is foil, over length, or vents somewhere it should not, like an attic or crawlspace, you get that in writing with options. The whole job is usually well under an hour when done alongside a duct cleaning.
- Disconnect, inspect and clean the transition duct behind the dryer.
- Rotary-brush the full run to the outdoor termination with vacuum or blower assist.
- Clear the exterior hood and damper; remove any screen.
- Inspect for crushed, separated or foil sections; confirm the vent actually terminates outdoors.
- Airflow check at the hood before and after; reconnect with a clamp.
- Written note of anything that should be replaced, with a flat price if you want it done.
How often should you clean it, and what does it cost?
Once a year is the right default for a typical household, and it should move to every six months if the run is long, has several elbows, serves a large family or a lot of pet hair, or you have already had the two-cycle symptom once. If the dryer vents to the roof, annual is the minimum because you cannot see the hood from the ground.

What can you do yourself between cleanings?
Clean the lint screen every load and wash it with soap and water every month or two, because dryer-sheet residue films over the mesh and restricts airflow even when it looks clean. Vacuum the screen slot and behind the dryer a couple of times a year. Walk outside while the dryer runs and confirm the hood opens and the air is strong. If you ever see lint blowing from the hood, that is a good sign, not a bad one; the bad sign is none at all.
Do not run the dryer overnight or when nobody is home, keep the area around it clear of baskets and cardboard, and never vent into an attic, garage or crawlspace.
