Why Your AC Freezes Up in Memphis Humidity (and What to Do First)

Short answer
An AC freezes when the indoor coil drops below 32°F, almost always from weak airflow (dirty filter, dirty coil, closed registers, undersized return) or low refrigerant from a leak. Memphis humidity feeds the ice fast. Switch the thermostat to OFF with the fan ON, check the filter, let it thaw 2–4 hours, and call if it ices again.
Why does an air conditioner freeze up in the first place?
Your indoor evaporator coil is supposed to run cold, roughly 40°F, so it can pull heat and moisture out of the air passing over it. If the coil drops below 32°F, the moisture condensing on it freezes instead of draining. Ice insulates the coil, airflow drops further, the coil gets colder still, and within hours you have a block of ice and warm air at the registers.
Two things drive a coil that cold: too little warm air moving across it, or too little refrigerant inside it. Memphis humidity does not cause the freeze, but it makes it worse. On a July afternoon with dew points in the 70s the return air carries so much moisture that the coil builds ice far faster than in a dry climate, so a marginal airflow problem that goes unnoticed in Denver becomes a service call here.
What airflow problems cause ice in Mid-South homes?
The dirty filter is the usual suspect, and in pollen season it clogs faster than the box says; ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean, or change it monthly during heavy-use periods. Behind the filter, a dirty evaporator coil does the same thing from the other side, and closed or blocked supply registers in unused rooms starve the system of the air it was sized to move.
The one we see most in older Memphis and DeSoto County homes is the single undersized return: a 1970s house with one grille in the hall feeding a system upsized twice since. Add a kinked flex duct in a 130-degree attic or a blower motor losing speed, and the coil runs cold even with a clean filter. Those are the cases where the homeowner did everything right.

Can low refrigerant freeze my AC?
Yes. When the charge is low, pressure inside the coil drops and so does its temperature, so the coil can ice over even with perfect airflow. Systems do not consume refrigerant; low charge means a leak, usually at a coil, a flare joint, or a Schrader valve. Topping off without fixing the leak buys you a weekend, not a summer, and costs more each time.
Refrigerant work is regulated: only EPA Section 608 certified technicians may handle it, one reason it is not a DIY job. What should you do before we arrive? (Thaw it first)
Do not keep running the compressor on a frozen coil. Set the thermostat mode to OFF and the fan to ON. The fan moves warm house air across the coil and melts the ice in 2–4 hours, longer for a solid block. Pull the filter; if it is gray and packed, replace it with the same size in a MERV 8–11 pleated filter, and open every supply register.
Put towels or a shallow pan under the indoor unit, because a thawing coil sheds more water than the drain pan may handle. Do not chip, scrape, or hit the ice; fins and copper bend easily, and a punctured coil turns a cheap fix into an expensive one. Photograph the ice on the coil and on the larger copper line at the outdoor unit before it melts, and upload the photos when you book.

When should you call for service?
If the system thawed, you changed a dirty filter, and it stayed ice-free through a full afternoon, you may have fixed it. Call if it refreezes with a clean filter, if you see ice on the large insulated copper line at the outdoor unit, if you hear hissing near the indoor coil, or if airflow stays weak after a thaw. Those point to a coil, charge, or blower problem.
Call sooner if water is reaching drywall or flooring, or if anyone in the house is heat-sensitive, since a frozen system can take hours to recover once the coil clears. What does the technician check, and what does it cost?
The diagnostic is $89–$129 and is applied to the repair if you proceed. We confirm the filter and measure static pressure, inspect the evaporator coil and condensate drain, check blower speed and motor amps, and read refrigerant pressures, superheat, and subcooling to tell an airflow freeze from a refrigerant freeze. If the charge is low, we leak-search rather than just add refrigerant.
Common repairs such as a blower capacitor, a failing motor, a coil cleaning, or a thermostat fault fall in our $150–$650 range. Leak repair, recharge, or a coil replacement falls in the $350–$2,400 refrigerant and compressor range. Either way the flat-rate price is in writing before work begins, and if the real fix is a duct or return problem we quote that separately.
How do you keep it from freezing again?
Most repeat freezes come back to the same three things: filters that go too long, a coil that was never cleaned, and a return that was never big enough. Set a filter reminder for every 30–60 days in summer, keep registers open in unused rooms, and have the coil and drain cleaned at a spring tune-up. How long does it take a frozen AC to thaw?+

Can I run the fan to thaw a frozen air conditioner?+
Yes, and you should. Fan ON with cooling OFF pushes warm house air across the coil and melts the ice without running the compressor. Put towels under the indoor unit.
Will a frozen AC fix itself?+
It will thaw, but the cause stays. If the cause was a clogged filter, replacing it may be the whole fix. If it refreezes with a clean filter, it is duct airflow, a dirty coil, a blower fault, or a refrigerant leak, and it needs a technician.
Why does my AC freeze up at night?+
Cooler, humid nights mean a lower load, longer runs, and less heat for the coil to absorb, so a system already marginal on airflow or charge is most likely to ice over after dark.
